Decision making is a part of our every day lives.
Inevitably, we all have to make decisions, some
could be more important than others.
Making important decisions like when to get
married, choosing a career path, quitting your job
or finding a new one etc. can create a lot of
tension. In such moments remaining indecisive
seems to be a better option but it isn’t.
The goal of every decision is to make a choice
that the positive outcome can outweigh possible
losses.
I have here 7 things that will help you in making
critical decisions;
1. Consider Your State of Mind: The process of
making an important decision should be rational
and logical. That means that we are to make
these decisions when we are in the right frame/
state of mind. Don’t make any significant or
important decisions when you are tired, stressed
out, emotionally unstable or excited.
2. Do not Be Sentimental: Like I have pointed out
earlier, every significant decision process should
be rational and logical and not emotional.
Emotions can easily blind us to reality. Don’t take
that step just because someone else did. Don’t
make that move just because it feels good. That it
is good to you does not mean it is good for you.
Don’t let your emotions rule you.
3. Take Your Time: Significant or important
decisions should never be made in a hurry. This is
because you need time to think over it. You need
time to gather your facts. When you are informed
it is easier to make better decisions. However, too
many analysis and information as well as dwelling
on the decision process for so long can get you
overwhelmed.
4. Consider The Possible Gain and Loss: There are
always two sides to every decision you make. It
usually involves a measure of risk. You should
critically analyze the possible pros and cons.
Determine the possible loss and gain. That way it
will be easier to estimate the risk and know if it is
worth it.
5. Think Long Term: The impact of most of the
significant decisions we make are not usually felt
in the present but later. So do not make your
decisions with your eyes only on the present. You
need to consider the impact of such decisions on
your future. You should ask the question, “would I
be able to live with this decision in the next 5, 10
years or more?”
6. Talk To Someone About It: Confiding in someone
you can trust and intimating them on the decision
you are about to make is not a bad idea. There
may be aspects of the decision that you may not
have seen or considered; talking to someone
could help you see the whole thing from a
different perspective and will help you think
clearly with the least amount of bias or
sentimentality.
7. Take Time To Prayerfully Reflect: It is advisable
that you take time to look inward. If you believe in
God, pray about the decision you are about to
make. There comes a time when we are clueless
regardless of the facts before us. Search your
inner self. Are you at peace with the decision you
are about to make? An inner peace is usually a
sign that we are on the right path.
