Osinbajo, the acting President of Nigeria has rejected four bills sent
to him by the National Assembly citing different reasons.

In letter a to the Senate, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has
refused to assent to four bills presented to him by the National
Assembly and has returned them back for correction.
The letter of rejection was read today by Senate President Bukola
Saraki at Senate plenary. The four bills are: Dangerous Drugs Amendment
Bill 2016, National Lottery Amendment Bill 2016, Agriculture Credit
Guarantee Scheme Fund 2016, and Currency Conversion Freezing Order
Amendment Bill 2016.
While giving reasons for the rejection, Osinbajo said some of the bills was withheld due to “concerns regarding words and phrases, and the spirit behind the amendment”, and due to “the existence of pending legal issue”.
While reacting to the rejection, Senator Dino Melaye, representing
Kogi west, said the executive must respect the principle of separation
of powers. He said it was the responsibility of the executive to assent
to bills made by the legislature or go to court to challenge them.
The matter was later referred to the legal department of the National Assembly for advice and interpretation.
